Purposeful Comedy against Sectarian Policies: Sarcastic Political Comic Programs combat Sectarian Policies and Corruption in Iraq

Aug 11, 2018

The session opened by Ahmed Waheed's speech about social media which he described as a field that is different than ordinary media that existed in the past, comparing watching a program on TV as in previous times and how publicity of characters was exclusive on TV to what's happening in the meantime, as a new type and field of publicity has been created and topics are being presented for specific categories of people, who also might get affected by the negative responses. About political comedy, Ahmed Waheed Said, indiscriminately, that when political actors are criticized, the responses of the audience may bring more fears than the responses of the politicians may do, and this may be represented by the electronic armies that target the idea we present, and increase the negative comments for the purpose of directing the followers to follow their lead in criticism under the policy of majority. Talking about the role of media and social media in fighting sectarian policies and piece building, Ali Fadhil said that comedy in Iraq is similar to a mathematical theorem that has given facts and a result, and by the time, this theorem gets harder because of the exhaustion of the given facts while there are continuous demands for the result. He indicated that the programs presented on TV do not get real views observation. He added that there is a difference between publicity and stardom, besides that the positive and negative comments could be considered the standard of the quality of contents. In addition, he said that there is a problem of people's loss of confidence of artistic contents for a long time, and that is because of the political mindset which led to people's uncertainty about the contents' nature and impartiality. However, the impartial contents surely remain far from those problems. About the difference between the contents of TV shows and the contents of social media, the actor Ali Fadhil said that a person should not have simple ambitions, indicating that he does not work for an institution that asks him to create contents for the sake of an official, but he, personally, works within an institution and walks on a specific path, as he targets humans not policy, because when a certain political figure is targeted, a problem will be created regarding that political figure if he or she was selected and chosen personally. However, when humans are targeted, it can change the concepts of the receivers, and the proof of that is the difference between the rates of the voters of 2014 elections and the voters of 2018 elections. Those rates indicate that there are changes in the mindset of the citizens and the way they distinguish between the corrupt and non-corrupt politicians. Within the last part of the session, the actor Ahmed Waheed indicated that terrorism is a result of the lack of services, job opportunities, and the decline of standard of living, adding that comedy is not able to topple any political figure; although it may help a little bit, but the one thing that can topple the political figure is the performance, whenever it is good, it will help to topple the politicians.
